Skin Care and Aging

Taking care of the skin is a lifetime commitment. As we get older, some lifestyle changes should be implemented to prevent excessive aging on the skin. Although aging is a normal part of life, some factors may speed up the process. Once wrinkles and fine lines frequently occur on the skin, it may be hard to reverse this process. Here are a few ways to take care of your skin and continue to grace with age:

Avoid Dry Skin

Studies have shown that dry skin becomes more prevalent with older age. Dry skin in older people is caused by a lack of liquids, decreased sweat or oil glands, and excess exposure to the sun. With age, untreated dry skin can lead to dry patches, cracks, and irreversible blemishes on the skin. To avoid dryness on the skin, it’s important to stay hydrated by drinking proper fluids and staying moisturized with fragrance-free products. Scents or dyes may irritate the skin and cause unwanted inflammation and dryness. Hydration will keep the skin healthy and slow down the aging process.

The skin becomes more sensitive with age; this is why it’s important to always protect the body with sunscreen. As people get older, collagen production in the body decreases, which also decreases skin elasticity, making it easier for the skin to sag and fold. Also, with age, the skin becomes more fragile and thinner, which makes it harder to protect the body. Sunscreen protects the skin from UV ray penetration, which may impact the body severely as we get older. When the skin gets attacked by the sun rays, the damages may be irreversible due to the sensitivity of the skin.

Furthermore, it is important to wear protective clothing, especially during the hours when sunlight is at its’ peak. UV rays are not only harmful to the facial area, but they can also impact different areas of the body such as legs, hands, arms, and feet.

Take a few days to examine your lifestyle habits and see what efforts you can make to encourage healthy skin. Also, as we get older, our skincare routine may need a bit revamping. You may begin to notice that your oily skin, is now becoming easily dry, and you always have to remoisturize it throughout the day. Before adding new products to your skincare routine, be sure to talk to a licensed professional about the changes to your skin to properly determine your skin type.
